BMW’s baby SUV will be produced by Magna Steyr in Austria, and sales are to start at the end of next year or early 2010.
The X1 will be manufactured on a new platform resulting from that of the 1-Series; the engine line-up will feature the 120i (170bhp) and 130i (265bhp) petrol units, and 120d (177bhp) and 123d (204bhp) diesels, with BMW’s xDrive four-wheel-drive system. This Concept X1 show car is ‘very close in styling’ to the real thing, say BMW insiders, though some of the concept’s technical features may not be available immediately from launch.
Shorter than the X3, the X1 is 4457mm long, with a 2760mm wheelbase to give a roomy interior. It has an X6-style raked tailgate, and whilst it bears a strong resemblance to all BMW’s other X models, up front it has new headlights with 3D-effect surrounds and clear glass, and new wraparound-effect LEDs for the rear taillights.
The car is comes in metallic gold paint with silver roof rails and two-tone dark grey/polished aluminum 19-inch alloy wheels. |
